PhD TOP UP SCHOLARSHIPS  

The Lung Institute of Western Australia (LIWA) offers a PhD Top Up Scholarship to students with outstanding undergraduate results who attract Australian Postgraduate Awards or equivalent scholarships.

Students are encouraged to apply for a supplementary award valued at $10,000 per annum to top up their income for the duration of their research studies with LIWA.

The award is open to applicants across Australia who intend to enrol at the University of Western Australia or Curtin University of Technology.

Applications for the LIWA PhD Top Up Scholarship close Friday 5 October 2012.

Projects

Up to four PhD Top Up Scholarships are offered by LIWA to exceptional candidates. A full PhD Scholarship may be awarded in exceptional circumstances. Current areas of study include:

Tissue Repair Uniit

  1. Evaluating the molecular mechanisms which protect against lung fibrosis
  2. Small non-coding RNAs- A source of novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets in MM

Molecular Genetics and Inflammation Unit

  1. The role of miRNA in lung inflammatory diseases
  2. Alternative gene splicing and asthma
  3. Interaction between PGE2 & PGD2 in lung inflammation 
  4. Aberrant expression of Prostaglandin receptors contributes to asthma severity
  5. Developing a gene therapy for asthma
  6. Characterisation of Glucocorticoid Receptor Splice Variants in Severe Asthma

Pleural Diseases Unit

  1. Biological Role of Novel Growth Factors in the Pathogenesis of Malignant Mesothelioma
