CLINICAL TRIALS UNITWho We AreThe CTU is led by Prof Philip Thompson, a senior academic of The University of Western Australia and Medical Director of LIWA. Our clinic is managed by Ms Meagan Shorten and staffed by trained respiratory nurses, doctors and scientists, with expert knowledge of lung diseases, lung function testing and medications. Where We AreOur clinic is within the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, giving easy access to services and diagnostic facilities. Parking facilities are available to patients and Transperth buses provide a regular service from the city and major train stations. What We DoSince we opened in 1998 our unit has participated in over 150 clinical trials, involving over 1000 patients. The trials in which we participate conform to the highest standards of ethics approval, registration, scientific design and patient care. The wellbeing of our patients is our priority. All studies are ethical approved to ensure patient safety and confidentiality. Most clinical trials that we run are early phase studies, which are working with novel therapies which hold promise of significant advances in treatment. But we also participate in late phase studies, testing the relative benefits of a new medication or formulation against other known medications.
