SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of bronchietasis often develop gradually over a period of months or years. The severity of symptoms varies widely from patient to patient and occasionally a patient is asymptomatic. Common symptoms of bronchiectasis include:

  • Chronic cough producing large amounts of discoloured or odorous sputum
  • Coughing up blood
  • Shortness of breath (increased during exercise)
  • Wheezing
  • Coughing which is worse at night and when lying down
  • Abnormal chest sounds
  • Weight loss
  • Weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Clubbing of fingers (abnormal amount of tissue in the fingernail beds)
  • Skin discolouration
  • Paleness
  • Breath odor.
